Goodsill’s Start-Up Business Team Invited to Speak at UH’s Entrepreneurs’ Bootcamp

Goodsill Business Law Counsel Johnathan C. Bolton and Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel Martin S. Loui spoke at the 2013 Entrepreneurs’ Bootcamp #2 workshop, hosted by the University of Hawai’i (UH). Invited back by the Shidler College of Business on March 16, 2013, Goodsill was pleased to roll-out a presentation, on the topic of Key Items with Business Transactions and Intellectual Property that Every Startup Should Know, to an audience of UH students and faculty interested in forming a start-up business. At the one-day workshop, PACE tapped into the expertise of faculty and business professionals to assemble a program that provided instruction on startup fundraising, navigating business law and IP issues, and preparing for investor pitches, Both Bolton and Loui are Virtual Professionals-In-Residence (VPIRs) for PACE, where they mentor up-and-coming entrepreneurs slated to form the next generation of start-up businesses.
Tracy Taira, Program Manager at PACE, stated: “We appreciate the assistance of community volunteers that add value to our programs like the Entrepreneurs’ Bootcamps. Martin Loui and Johnathan Bolton with Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel presented an hour-long session on intellectual property issues that provided our attendees essential knowledge to develop their business ideas and to make plans for their future ventures.”
Loui spoke on the topic of Intellectual Property. He touched upon the following:
- IP provides a sustainable competitive advantage for startups via patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, rights of publicity and domain names
- IP that is typical for several industries, such as ecommerce, software, retail, technology and R&D
- Mechanisms for ensuring that the startup owns its IP
- The intersection of IP and Internet laws, with illustrative examples using Creative Commons, and pop culture personality “Snooki”
Bolton discussed Business Law Issues for Start-Ups including:
- Corporate formation
- Corporate governance
- Contract provisions
- Business Transactions
- Avoiding litigation
