University of Hawai’i’s Moot Court Team Advances to Nationals

(HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I – MARCH 13, 2013) – The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law (U.H.) Trademark Moot Court Team won the Western Regional phase of the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition. It is the first win for U.H. at the regional round.
“This moot court teams’ noteworthy success in trademark law is unprecedented and a tribute to the dedication and skill of these students, and the generous commitment of time and effort from their exceptionally knowledgeable coaches,” said Aviam Soifer, dean of U.H. Richardson School of Law.
Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel (Goodsill) intellectual practice (IP) counsel Martin S. Loui co-coached students Andrea Maglasang-Miller, Shirley Lou-Magnuson, Avery Matro and Nikki Yamauchi before finals at the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. The team will compete against seven other regional teams beginning March 16.
Goodsill hosted the final practice session in its new office at First Hawai’ian Center. The team used the new facility to refine legal arguments and oral advocacy skills. Goodsill awarded a surprise sponsorship to the team during the final session.
“This sponsorship commends students for their dedication and commitment to learning procedure, technicalities and nuances of trademark law,” said Loui. “This is a shining moment as they represent Hawai‘i’s law school at nationals before expert trademark practitioners and trademark judges.”
Goodsill is a member of the moot court competition sponsor, International Trademark Association (INTA), and is committed to raising awareness in the legal area of trademarks and IP. Goodsill’s IP practice includes attorneys versed in trademark clearance, selections, prosecution, domestic and international portfolio development, licensing and trademark litigation.
