We provide billable hour credit for pro bono work. The firm continues to contribute
substantial hours annually to matters referred to us by Volunteer Legal Services
Hawaii, an organization that coordinates intake and delivery of pro bono services by
referring low income clients to attorneys willing to accept pro bono cases. Cases
from Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii have involved contract disputes, defense of
collection cases, immigration, landlord-tenant disputes, defense of personal injury
cases, representation of non-profit corporations, drafting of wills, representing
parties in will disputes, administrative appeals relating to denial of
veterans' housing and food stamp benefits, and other areas. In addition,
individual attorneys may accept pro bono matters from clients and other sources,
provided there is no conflict with matters we are handling for our existing clients.
Our attorneys are also active as directors, officers, and members of many community
and non-profit organizations, as well as the Hawaii State Bar Association. Attorneys
in the firm often serve as continuing legal education instructors, teach courses at
the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii, serve as
arbitrators in the State of Hawaii-Court Annexed Arbitration Program, and serve on a
variety of commissions.
