Summer Associate Program
In our summer program, summer associates work in as many areas of our practice, and directly with as many of our attorneys, as possible. Each summer associate spends approximately half of the summer working in the litigation area and the other half of the summer working in other areas of our practice. Although a summer associate's primary exposure to the practice of law with our firm will be research and writing assignments, we give summer associates the opportunity, when feasible, to attend various legal proceedings, such as trials, hearings and depositions, and to participate in negotiating and planning sessions and client meetings. The firm has regular in-house training and seminar programs for attorneys on an ongoing basis, and summer associates are encouraged to attend. Our summer program is structured to provide summer associates with feedback concerning their work from the attorneys who have given the assignments. There are also a variety of informal social activities to further acquaint summer associates with the partners and associates in the firm.
We give priority consideration to summer associates in making our hiring decisions, and we make an effort to correlate the number of summer associates we hire with the number of associate positions we will have available. The number of summer associates (second-year students) hired in the last five years and the number of them receiving offers to join us as associate attorneys in each of those years are as follows:
Summer Associates
Hired
Summer Associates
Receiving Offers
2001 5 5
2002 6 6
2003 4 4
2004 2 2
2005 2 2
2006 2 2
Because our summer program is designed to acquaint a summer associate with the different areas of our practice and with a number of our attorneys, the firm generally disfavors allowing summer associates to "split" their summers with other firms, but will consider requests to do so under special circumstances.
We encourage new associates to assume increasing responsibility as early as possible, and it is not unusual for associates to have direct contact with our clients and courtroom experience almost immediately upon admission to the Hawaii bar. The firm always attempts to accommodate the preferences of new associates in determining the areas in which they will practice, subject to the needs of the firm.
During the fall of 2006, we will be interviewing on campus at the University of Hawaii and schools on the mainland.
