Do Lions Purr? The Dangers of Using Internet Searches To Vet Applicants

In the era of constant internet connectivity, whenever we are curious, we immediately jump on our favorite search engine to find what we are looking for.  Although this may be a great way to figure out how many square feet are in a hectare (107,639), or to find out if lions purr, it is not necessarily the best way to investigate an applicant’s qualifications or ability to fit in with the team. If you choose to do internet searches on applicants, make sure it is only part of a comprehensive hiring process, and create specific policies and parameters around the use and scope of the internet and social media searches.
