Goodsill Partner Deirdre Marie-Iha Secures Significant Hawaiʻi Supreme Court Victory

On Behalf of | Oct 15, 2026 | Firm News

Goodsill congratulates Partner Deirdre Marie-Iha on a significant result before the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court in an election dispute concerning the eligibility of Honolulu City Councilmember Tommy Waters to seek another consecutive term.

Representing client Trevor Ozawa, Deirdre argued the matter before the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court on August 25, 2026. Three days later, on August 28, the Court issued decisions addressing the dispute and concluding that Waters was not eligible to seek another consecutive term on the City Council under the Honolulu Charter’s term-limit provision.

The matter presented complex questions involving the interpretation of the Honolulu Charter and Hawaiʻi election law and proceeded on an expedited timeline because of the upcoming general election.

The result reflects Deirdre’s extensive appellate experience and her ability to navigate complex, time-sensitive matters before Hawaiʻi’s highest court.

Deirdre was joined in representing Ozawa by Goodsill attorneys Matthew D. Ezer and Kellie K. L. Wong.

Congratulations to Deirdre, Matthew, Kellie and the team on their work on this significant matter.
